The New York City Greenwich Village Italian Food Tour explores Greenwich Village’s 160-plus year-old Italian neighborhood. Your tummy will sample these yummy tastes: Pino’s prosciutto di Parma, Pepe Rosso To Go onion focaccia, a sweet Brazilian Brigadeiro, Raffetto’s ravioli, a steamy Faicco’s arancino rice ball, a Joe’s New York Style Pizza slice or a Ben’s Pizza Sicilian Grandma slice, fresh Porto Rico espresso, and a decadent Rocco’s fruit-a-misu pastry.
We start at the magnificent Romanesque St. Anthony of Padua Church, built in 1888. It is the first Italian and Italian-speaking Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Then we move on to Raffetto’s Pasta (founded in 1907) and the Tira a Segno Italian Rifle Club and the famed cafes of MacDougal Street, where beatniks, folkies, and hippies alike gathered in cigarette-filled coffee houses. You’ll also see the 1907 Porto Rico Importing Company, with its over 100 tea and coffee varieties, including its $125/lb Ting Tong Oolong Tea and $100/lb Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. Marvel at the stunning baroque interior of Our Lady Pompeii Church, which is the only Manhattan church offering Sunday Mass in Italian. Finally, relax in the Italianate Father Demo Square, as you are surrounded in this Italian piazza by pizza lovers devouring stringy slices of Joe’s Pizza.
Greg’s great-great Italian-American grandparents, Giuseppe Mare and Maria nee Radice, settled here in 1884, before Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty’s construction. Greg bursts into song at any moment for maximum fun. This neighborhood comes alive with food, stories, music, and fun peppered with Greg’s personal Italian American family stories.
